Poland will reduce public debt in 2012

Poland will succeed in reducing its public debt in 2012 even if the zloty enjoys no appreciation in relation to 2011, Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski told radio TOK FM Thursday morning.

"It's a year of trend reversal. Even if we didn't see any improvement in the zloty's value in comparison to December [2011], we would still record debt decline by around PLN 25 billion in relation to GDP," Rostowski said.

The zloty's recent depreciation is no surprise or reason for concern to the Finance Minister."I am not surprised that the zloty is reacting that way - it always weakens when the euro does. . .," he said.

Poland is well prepared for the period of turbulence related to Greece's potential exit from the euro zone, as it has already financed two thirds of borrowing needs, the official added.
